UNFORESEEN CIRCUMSTANCES :
STRATEGIES AND TECHNOLOGIES FOR PROTECTING YOUR BUSINESS AND YOUR
PEOPLE IN A LESS SECURE WORLD
by Alexis Gutzman
“Unforeseen Circumstances addresses the changes that companies must make to prevent
crippling losses in the wake of sudden events. This timely and crucial book takes executives
through an array of alternative strategies and new technologies in vital areas such as:
* Employee safety and security: in-depth interviews with security professionals on facing
both traditional and unconventional threats; plus new developments like paperless mail,
fingerprint and voice recognition, retinal scanning, and other biometric identification
techniques
* Operational strategy: organizational changes; reducing reliance on plant- and
infrastructure-based workplace models; rethinking sales, marketing, and project
management; minimizing costs and risks of air travel; succession planning.
* Communications and information: technologies for virtual and teleconferenced
meetings, webcast presentations, and desktop-based training; plus advances in remote
data storage, secure information transfer, and wireless applications.
“Companies that change with the times will not only be prepared for any eventuality, they'll
also keep employees happy and business running smoothly for years to come.”

“Nothing in American business can be taken for granted. Directly or indirectly, world events
affect companies of every shape and size, in every industry, more than ever before.
Concerns that once seemed remote or hypothetical are now all too real.
“What is not so clear is how companies can better protect themselves from sudden,
unpredictable changes that could affect their ability to function efficiently, and in the worst
cases, endanger the safety of their employees. Unforeseen Circumstances is the first book
to examine the specific measures businesses can take to protect their people, information,
and property from adversity-not just right now, but for the long term.
“First on the minds of business managers and executives is the need to make their
employees feel safe on the job. Webcast technology, virtual meetings, and teleconferencing
mean reduced air travel for sales professionals, minimizing both cost and safety risk, while
telecommuting, improved security procedures, and broader use of e-mail keep the rest of
your staff safe, comfortable-and productive.
“Additional security developments include systems and devices that are at once astounding
and reassuring. Unforeseen Circumstances describes the latest in biometric identification
methods like iris scanning and fingerprint and facial recognition. Once the stuff of James
Bond movies, these incredible technologies now represent the cutting edge in security
options.
“And while people are your biggest responsibility, you must also take proactive steps to
protect your business interests and your company's assets. Computers and the Internet
empower your company, but they are vulnerable to both technical problems and deliberate
attacks. Unforeseen Circumstances guides you through the available data storage and
security options, from e-mail privacy and secure transactions to wireless networks and
satelliteenabled corporate communication.
“Finally, the book takes a good look at one of the most vital and difficult questions a business
will ever face: Who will lead the company when its current leaders are gone? Proper
succession planning, though a somber topic, is the sign of a diligent and responsible
company planning for the future with complete confidence in a new generation of homegrown
leaders. Unforeseen Circumstances lays the groundwork for a sensible plan that, combined
with new approaches to security, strategy, and the technologies that will power them, gives
today's and tomorrow's leaders the power to keep business thriving-come what may.”

“How safe is your business post 9/11? What is a safe business, anyway?
New book exposes the real threats to business in today’s volatile world and arms managers
to protect their operations, data and people
“September 11th was a wake-up call for American business. Suddenly, many standard
practices - from flying employees around the globe for meetings, to opening stacks of letters
delivered to the company mailroom - were identified as risky behavior. Suddenly, managers
were facing new threats and grappling with real fears.
“Timely and vital, UNFORESEEN CIRCUMSTANCES: Strategies and Technologies for
Protecting Your Business and Your People in a Less Secure World is the book every
business needs today to ensure its survival tomorrow. Drawing on extensive interviews with
security specialists in both the private and public sector, author Alexis D. Gutzman delivers
concrete, state-of-the-art safeguards for every company’s most valuable assets in the worst
possible scenarios.
"This is not a book about disaster preparedness or disaster recovery," Gutzman assures
business leaders. "This is a book about putting the right strategies and technologies into
place so that whatever disaster befalls your community - be it terrorism, a flood that
collapses the city infrastructure, or a gas fire that melts communication lines - you are ready,
and your business can continue without skipping a beat."
“How can we stay competitive if our employees are afraid to fly and our customers are afraid
to open the mail? How can we protect our place of business? How can we secure our data?
How can we keep our people safe? UNFORESEEN CIRCUMSTANCES takes on these
urgent questions - questions plaguing decision-makers in businesses across the board, from
marketing to construction.
“Backed by expert advice, up-to-the-minute information, and ready-for-action options,
Gutzman presents a resource full of targeted, practical, reassuring answers. Throughout,
executives, managers, and entrepreneurs will find scores of business-saving technologies
and tactics, including:
• Innovative Web-based tools for conducting efficient, productive virtual meetings
• Strategies for strengthening team collaboration with project management software
• Guidelines for building a loyal and goal driven work-from-home workforce
• Effective, low-cost alternatives to paper mail, from EDM to eBilling
• A tour of real-world biometrics security, from iris scanning to facial recognition
• Ways to cut the cord and keep a company’s network on-line
• Cutting-edge advances in filtering e-mail and guarding Web servers from hackers
• Blueprints for reducing reliance on physical plants, with the lowdown on xSPs
“Each chapter culminates with a comprehensive resource guide, highlighting informative
Web sites, newsletters, and white papers, as well as companies ready to supply solutions.
"Any book that was published before January 2002 on the topic of business planning is
probably obsolete," Gutzman contends. "Those books talked about centralized sales forces.
Those books explained how to invoice on paper. Those books discussed security with
consequences to bits and bytes, not people and lives. The landscape has changed."
UNFORESEEN CIRCUMSTANCES is the book to help any business ensure a safe,
successful future now - regardless of the upheavals down the road.”

“RED ALERT FOR WORKPLACE SECURITY POST 9/11
Safeguard Your Physical Space
“ * Spot the bad guys with biometrics. Light-years away from traditional security measures
such as ID cards, biometrics uses state-of-the-art technology to verify the identity of your
employees, keeping out potential dangers. Based on who you are—not what you have (like
an ID badge) or what you know (like the code for a keypad)—biometrics defies
authentication schemers. Methods of biometrics security include:
“ * Fingerprint biometrics is especially effective with the use of multiple fingers and a
fingerprint reader that can also sense body temperature so that an image of fingerprint lifted
from a coffee mug cannot be used to feign identity. A computer mouse that can read a
fingerprint and a monitor-top camera to provide facial recognition are also good ways to
secure data.
“ * Iris and retina scans are ideal for high security facilities where those being scanned
are insiders seeking access. The accuracy level is unmatched and no human supervision is
required.
“ * Facial recognition is an excellent form of biometrics for high-traffic environments
such as airports where it is already being used.
“ * Relocate to low-risk facilities. Seek out lower-rise buildings with smaller
footprintsówhere a few flights of stairs separate employees from the outside and where the
windows open. One of the safest sites for any business is also the most pleasant: a
campus-type complex in the suburbs of a large metropolitan area, with its own immediately
available parking lots.”
