: : Hi all,
: : I'm pretty new to this area of disaster recovery planning, I just can't seem to find out much about how exactly I would successfully test a disaster recovery plan that I don't even know will be completely sucessful? Say I try a test recovery of email files but something goes wrong, it could be counter productive to the disaster recovery efforts?
: : Any advice would be highly apreciated.

: Lee,
: First of all, it depends on what you mean by 'goes wrong.'
: If you're in the early stages of disaster recovery testing, you should not be testing the live email environment - you should be using a mirrored or replicated environment, totally isolated from the live, production systems.
: Assuming that's the case - if "something goes wrong," that's a GOOD thing! You want your exercise program to point out your weaknesses, vulnerabilities, false assumptions, incorrect data, etc.
: You will note I used the term 'exercise' and not 'test.' Testing is typically pass/fail; exercise makes you stronger. In other words, each time you conduct an exercise, you should be finding new ways to strengthen your BC/DR program. If you don't find any faults, you're not exercising hard enough!
: See the book Disaster Recovery Testing: Exercising Your Contingency Plan for additional resources.
