Dear Veronica,

Although I have no stats to back this up, I see that there is a lot more talk and interest in the topic than there has been for a long time, however, I see very little action. For example, while there may have been a slight increase in job openings for people in the profession, I do not see a huge jump. Thousands of cities across America still do not have anyone dedicated (even part-time) to disaster planning for the community. Most county offices have tiny staffs (often only one person) to ensure the welfare of hundreds of thousands in a disaster. Surveys in trade publications and business journals claim that many companies have "reviewed" existing plans since 9/11, but what does that mean? Thousands of companies of all sizes still have no plan at all beyond evacuating in a fire alarm.

Nationally, our interest has been raised, unfortunately, I belive we are still a long way from seeing real improvements where the rubber meets the road. Except in a few rare circumstances, it all comes down to whether or not there is something (legislation, pressure from stockholders, etc) forcing a plan.

Best wishes on your paper.

Theresa
