MODULE 1 - INTRODUCTION TO BUSINESS CONTINUITY PLANNING

The objective of this module is to provide a detailed introduction to business continuity
planning. Students not only learn fundamental principles and concepts of business
continuity
planning, but also learn the business continuity planning process, business continuity
program, and business continuity plan.

In this module students will
- Identify business continuity program objectives.
- Learn the definition of disaster, sources of disaster, example disasters, and
disaster statistics.
- Understand the components of a business continuity program and its historical
evolution.
- Examine the reasons for establishing a business continuity program.
- Learn business continuity program principles and how each principle is applied in
the process.
- Understand the business continuity planning process and its various stages and
objectives.
- Become familiar with the business continuity plan and its structure, elements,
activities, and documentation; emergency response plan and its relationship to the business
continuity plan; and business continuity plan appendices.
- Learn business continuity standards and models, and legal and regulatory
requirements.
- Understand and become familiar with various business continuity terms and
definitions needed during the business continuity planning process, such as disaster,
business function, business process, financial and operational impacts, Maximum Tolerable
Downtime (MTD), Recovery Time Objective (RTO), etc.

This module is a recommended pre-requisite for Module 2 and Module 3.

MODULE 2 - BUSINESS CONTINUITY MANAGEMENT

The objective of this module is to provide a detailed and in-depth understanding of business
continuity program management. This module provides an easy-to-follow practical approach
to planning, guiding, and controlling business continuity program activities including program
development, implementation, maintenance, and plan execution. It covers in detail the
concepts and activities of business continuity program management and its seven key
phases:
- Phase A: Program Initiation
- Phase B: Program Planning
- Phase C: Program Functional Requirements Analysis
- Phase D: Program Design and Development
- Phase E: Program Implementation and Testing
- Phase F: Program Maintenance
- Phase G: BC Plan Execution

In this module students will
- Identify business continuity program objectives and the importance of a program's
disaster mitigation, preparedness, response, and recovery capabilities.
- Learn the importance of various program requirements such as management's
commitment and buy-in, business continuity sponsor selection, budget allocation, risk
control
and recovery option selection.
- Learn the importance of establishing a business continuity project, business
continuity teams and team members and their roles and responsibilities.
- Learn the significance of a business continuity policy and the importance of
establishing a business continuity culture within all areas of the organization.
- Establish an overall business continuity program plan.
- Analyze the requirements that need to be fulfilled by the business continuity
program and develop, implement, test, and maintain an effective business continuity
program.
- Learn how to execute the business continuity plan in a timely and effective manner
in response to a disaster situation.
- Identify requirements and objectives for business continuity training and
awareness program.
- Learn the significance of coordination with external entities, contract

MODULE 3 - BUSINESS CONTINUITY PLANNING METHODS

The objective of this module is to
- Provide a detailed and in-depth understanding of the business continuity planning
process
- Teach students systematic methods to manage risks, conduct a business impact
analysis, develop a business continuity strategy, and develop, test, and maintain an effective
business continuity plan.

This module covers in detail the six key stages of the business continuity planning process:
- Stage 1: Risk Management
- Stage 2: Business Impact Analysis
- Stage 3: Business Continuity Strategy Development
- Stage 4: Business Continuity Plan Development
- Stage 5: Business Continuity Plan Testing
- Stage 6: Business Continuity Plan Maintenance

In this module students will
- Learn the stages that comprise the business continuity planning process, the
sequence in which these stages occur within the planning process, and how each stage
interacts with one another to maintain continuity.
- Learn how to assess and control risks to business continuity, and analyze threats
of disaster, existing vulnerabilities, potential disaster impact, and risk controls options.
- Identify mission critical business processes and their recovery requirements and
analyze the impact to business if these processes are interrupted.
- Learn how to develop a business continuity strategy for a timely and cost-effective
recovery from potential business disruptions.

ABOUT THE AUTHORS

DR. AKHTAR SYED, PH.D., CISSP has extensive training and consulting experience in the
field of Business Continuity Planning (BCP). As a consultant and trainer, he has assisted
numerous organizations with BCP training, business impact analysis, continuity strategy
assessment, and business continuity plan development and testing. He has also worked with
IBM Global Services as a senior business continuity consultant, helping businesses with
alternate disaster recovery facility solutions.

Dr. Syed holds a doctorate degree in systems design engineering, masters degree in the
field of data communication services, and a bachelors degree in computer science. He is
also a Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP).


AFSAR SYED, BMATH, ABCP is a senior business continuity consultant, and has over 15
years of progressive business and technical experience in telecommunications, wireless and
wireline data networking, voice over IP services, Internet security, database systems,
computer programming, and product and project management. He possesses a bachelor of
mathematics degree in computer science and is an Associate Business Continuity
Professional (ABCP).
