FROM THE EIGHTEENTH EDITION:
“It’s been dubbed the ‘bible’ of fire protection. That’s because the Handbook stands
alone as
the most comprehensive, up-to-date, and authoritative fire protection resource ever
published. There’s nothing else like it! More than 2,400 pages written by over 200
of the
world’s most respected fire safety authorities deliver critical, contemporary
information you
simply can’t afford to be without!”
"This 18th edition of the Fire Protection Handbook marks its 96th year of
publication.
Originally known as the Crosby-Fiske Handbook of the Underwriter's Bureau of
New
England, the Fire Protection Handbook was first publish in 1896, the same year
the National
Fire Protection Association was founded.
"The 18th edition has been thoroughly revised and updated. It has been completely
reorganized to underscore the systems approach to fire protection that has
become
increasingly important as the body of fire protection knowledge has grown. This
edition is
organized around the six major strategies that encompass the building blocks of a
systems
approach to fire safety through balanced fire protection:
- prevention of ignition
- design to slow early fire growth
- detection and alarm
- suppression
- confinement of fire
- evacuation of occupants.
"The Fire Protection Handbook can be thought of as an encyclopedia of fire
protection. Its
183 chapters and five appendices were prepared by 203 of the fire protection
community's
leading professionals, each an expert in their particular subjects. The more than
2000 pages
and 2000+ illustrations cover the full range of fire-related topics - from accelerants
to zoning
ordinances. Whether the reader is involved with fire fighting, building design and
construction, sprinkler installation, fire fighter training, or any other aspect of fire
protection,
the Handbook is an invaluable tool."
