FROM THE INTRODUCTION
"The Hurricane Handbook began over three decades ago when Sharon Maddux
Carpenter experienced Hurricane Dora. She wanted more specific information to help her
family better cope in hurricane conditions. Resolving to be more prepared should a hurricane
strike her community again, Sharon spent years collecting information on hurricane
preparedness. For the past several years she has led seminars and worked with community
groups to help them become better able to prepare for a hurricane, and to rebuild their
homes and lives should one strike their area.
"Sharon Carpenter and her sister-in-law, Toni Garcia Carpenter, then began several
years of work to create The Hurricane Handbook. Toni, a professional writer, took the lead in
recording the vast collection of information in a comprehensive manner. The second phase
of
the research began when Toni and Sharon conducted an extensive series of interviews and
meetings with hurricane experts and survivors. The specific hurricane information and
experiences they shared have been invaluable. For almost two years, the authors
interviewed
these people, attended and held meetings, and finally, wrote the manuscript that became
The
Hurricane Handbook, A Practical Guide for Residents o f the Hurricane Belt.
"Within the pages of the book you will find over a thousand ways in which you can
become better prepared should a hurricane strike your neighborhood. The book out lines
ways to prepare your family and property in the pre-hurricane period, during a hurricane, and
in the slow rebuilding process in the aftermath of the storm.
"Although The Hurricane Handbook has been written based on the best information
available from hundreds of sources, the responsibility for the book is solely that of the
authors. In like manner, it must be emphasized that it would have been impossible for the
authors to foresee all of the situations which could result during or after a natural disaster
such as a hurricane. It is ultimately up to you, the reader, armed with the information in the
book, to serve as the final expert in your own circumstances, and to carefully consider how
best to apply the wealth of information within these pages.
"It is the sincere hope of the authors that as you use this book, you will make notes
in it,
that you will write all through it, and that you will use it as a guide to help you prepare for a
hurricane. We also hope that you will carry it with you should you evacuate your area early
and
wait out a hurricane far inland. For this reason, throughout the book you will see boxed areas
where you are invited to add the information that you would need in hurricane or
hurricane-recovery conditions. The first appears on the next page.
We hope you never experience a hurricane firsthand. However, should a hurricane track
toward your area, we hope you will use this book and evacuate early. We wish you safe
haven through the storm."
