Audit report identifies business continuity testing as a weak area in various major Australian government agencies
The Australian National Audit Office (ANAO) has published the interim findings of an audit of the financial statements of major Australian general government sector agencies for the year ending 30 June 2011.
The report includes an assessment of current business continuity management strategies in the 26 agencies that were audited.
ANAO reported that the audits had “identified a general improvement in the level of awareness and maintenance of business continuity and disaster recovery controls in agencies” but identified significant failures when it came to testing business continuity plans and strategies.
“Over 25 percent (seven agencies) did not test BCP’s as part of normal business practice,” states ANAO. “While this is an improvement compared with the position in 2009–10, further attention to this matter by some agencies is required. The absence of a properly tested BCP has the potential to put at risk an agency’s capacity to deal effectively with a disruptive event.”
